Helena P. “Lena” Giesbrecht Barkman BIRTH 4 Oct 1901 Greenland, Steinbach Census Division, Manitoba, Canada DEATH 26 Nov 1943 (aged 42) Steinbach, Steinbach Census Division, Manitoba, Canada BURIAL Greenland Church of God in Christ Mennonite Greenland, Steinbach Census Division, Manitoba, Canada MEMORIAL ID 171978428

Our mother, Helena Giesbrecht Barkman, was born Oct 4, 1901 in Greenland, Man. and passed out of this life Nov. 26, 1943 in the Steinbach hospital, at the age of 42 years, 1 month, and 22 days. At the age of 14 years she was converted and added to the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite through baptism, where she remained a faithful member to the end. She was united in holy matrimony with me Dave Barkman, on Dec. 26, 1920, and we have shared joys and sorrows for 23 years. Our union was blessed with 6 sons and 1 daughter. Her father and 2 brothers preceeded her in death. Our mother was called from our side through a tragic accident, which occurred on Nov. 25, While mother was searching for foot-wear for her boy with a lighted lantern, it came in contact with an open container with gasoline, setting her clothes afire. Her son Frank extinguished the fire, but the burns were so severe that she was rushed to the Steinbach hospital where she received the best of care but without success. She died 28 hours later. We lived in Alberta for a period of two years, and during this time her father passed away. She leaves to mourn her departure, me her bereaved husband, 6 sons, and 1 daughter, 1 daughter-in-law, 1 grand-child, her mother, 6 brothers, 2 sisters and a large host of relatives. She left with us a living hope and assurence of eternal life. -Husband and Children. Funeral services were held in the Greenland Church on Nov. 29, 1943. Interment was made in the near-by cemetery. Ministers Isaac Toews, Harry Wenger and John M. Penner spoke from scripture Psa. 50:1, Heb. 12:25, Mark 14:8, and Rev. 14:13.
