About Helena Glover

"It was formerly supposed that Helena or Ellen w.(wife) of Henry Glover was a Wakeman, but the English wills published in the Wakeman Genealogy make it clear that she was not. Prof. Dexter in New Haven Town Records, Vol. 2, p. 9, suggested that she was a Russell..."

Family

From The Great Migration Project

Helena _ married by 1641 to Henry Glover (b say 1616). She died at New Haven on 1 March 1697/8 [NHVR 70]. (Henry Glover was in some way brother to Thomas Cooper [1635, Windsor], which has led a number of prominent genealogists to speculate on what that might imply about the identity of Glover's wife [TAG 23:95-97, 48:208-14; Hale, House 498; Gillespie Anc 164; GM 2:2:205-12].)

Children:

Estate

From https://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Ellen_Unknown_(248)_

Following her death, her daughters and their husbands entered into an agreement dividing up the property: On 28 April 1698, whereas "Mrs. Hellena Glover late of New Haven deceased" left a writing which conveyed her testamentary wishes, but did not live to have it drawn up formally, "Moses Mansfeild of the town and county of New Haven in New England, for myself & in behalf of the children of my late dear wife Mercy, David Ashley of the town of Westfeild in the county of Hampshire in New England by & with the consent of Hannah my present wife & John Ball of said New Haven by & with the consent of Sarah my present wife and Abigaile Burr relict of Mr. Daniell Burr late of Fairfeild in New England deceased," the funeral charges and debts of "our honored mother the said Hellena Glover" having been paid, along with "an addition of five pounds to be paid ... unto the surviving children of Mr. John Glover late of New Haven deceased,"the residue is to be "equally divided among the said Moses, David, John & Abigaile" [NHPR 2:2:203-4].

Notes

Abigail and Sarah Glover (daughters of Helena) were mentioned in the 1662 will of Martha Davis

Source Laura Hine:

From the Land Records, 23 Dec. 1697, Widow Ellen Glover gives to her son-in-law, Major Moses Mansfield and Sergt. John Ball, a son-in-law, all her property except what she had already given to her grandson, John Glover. This information from "Descendents of Richard and Gillian Mansfield".

"Historical Catalogue of the Members of the First Church of Christ in New Haven, Connecticut (Center Church) AD 1639-1914" Compiled by F. B. Dexter shows that Ellen was admitted to Center Church in about 1661.

Disputed origins

Discrepancies:

"Families of Ancient New Haven" shows that Henry Glover's wife was Helena, sister of William Russel, who died on March 1, 1697. Researcher Laura A. Hine shows on her WorldConnect site that she was Ellen Wakeman, daughter of Francis Wakeman, who died in May of 1698. Source Mary Ann contends that Ellen is not a Wakeman. There is no mention of her in the will of Francis Wakeman. Mary Ann points out however that this may be due to a transcription error and does not prove or disprove that Ellen was his daughter. Mary Ann states that the original will really needs to be rechecked. Also, in the original records, there is a 5 year break where no children were born to Francis. Could it be that Ellen was born during that time and has been omitted accidentally from the records. Laura Hine is the source which shows the 1607 birth date. Note that Laura shows birth dates for most of the children of Francis when the dates should actually be shown as baptismal dates. Mary Ann examined the St. Leonard's church website where all the old records are transcribed. She thinks that some records are missing. No records could be found from 1609 to 1614 for any of the families she was researching. For example, Priscilla, born about 1610, does not appear on the list of baptisms even though she was mentioned in the will of her father, Francis.

John Wakeman, son of Francis Wakeman mentions in his will a 'sister Glover'. Mary Ann theorizes that Ellen Wakeman may only be related somehow to the actual wife of Henry Glover and this is why John refers to her as sister. Also, another possibility which Ellen points out: John Wakeman was married to Elizabeth Hopkins. Elizabeth mother was named Helena. Did Elizabeth have a sister named Helena, named after her mother and actually be the wife of Henry Glover?

Mary Ann shows that on one website, she found that most researchers believe that Ellen surname was Russell but that the only documentation to state this is "Families of Ancient New Haven."

Mary Ann also points out that her surname may have been Davis. As shown above, Donald Jacobus, in his "Families of Ancient New Haven" showed that she was the sister of William Russell. In a book he wrote later, however, "Families of Old Fairfield", he shows her surname as Davis. This may have been an error on Mr. Jacobus' part.

Jacobus added additions and corrections to his earlier work, "Families of Ancient New Haven". On page 765 of Volume III he states:

"It was formerly supposed that Helena or Ellen w.(wife) of Henry Glover was a Wakeman, but the English wills published in the Wakeman Genealogy make it clear that she was not. Prof. Dexter in New Haven Town Records, Vol. 2, p. 9, suggested that she was a Russell, and this was followed in the text, but placed in brackets to indicate that it was hypothetical. It is perhaps more likely that she was sister of William Davis, who m. (married) Martha Wakeman, and whose da. (daughter) m. (married) William Russell. The will of John Wakeman refers to his sister Davis and sister Glover. Martha Davis was his sister by blood and if Helena was sister of William Davis, that would make her the sister-in-law of John Wakeman's sister. Martha Davis names two of the Glover children in her will and William Russell left his children to the care of Henry Glover and his wife."

"Historical Catalogue of the Members of the First Church of Christ in New Haven, Connecticut (Center Church) AD 1639-1914" Compiled by F. B. Dexter shows her name as Ellen and does not specify who her parents were and shows that she died in March of 1698.

From the profile of Lieut. Thomas Cooper

In "Beginnings: Thomas Cooper of Springfield and Some Allied Families" (A. T. and J. B. Cooper, Gateway Press, Baltimore 1987), the authors argue persuasively that Thomas Cooper had a brother John Cooper who settled in New Haven, and a sister Ellen Cooper who married Henry Glover of New Haven. Though not conclusively proven, these relationships would help to account for the Cooper family's otherwise surprising links to New Haven families by affording the Springfield Coopers an occasional base of operations in New Haven. It would also help to explain Cooper links with Newark and Elizabethtown families, since many early settlers of Newark were from New Haven, some of them via Branford. It is also possible [this is my own speculation] that Timothy Cooper's widow and children, left homeless and destitute by John Pynchon and bearing only awful memories of their last years at Springfield, were taken in by the New Haven Coopers and/or Munsons until Elizabeth remarried.
