Hendrik Lodewijk Hein was one of a twin, later a student at the School of Agriculture in Groningen. He decided to emigrate to the Cape of Good Hope circa 1862. There he established himself in the Malmesbury, Swartland region. Most likely a farmer in wheat and livestock.
He married Anna Elizabeth Carstens and apparently had two children, Henriette Louise Hein and Anna Maria Hein.
Daughter, Anna Maria, or "Ammie", married Willem Hoffmann.
Hendrik Lodewijk died in Malmesbury, circumstances unknown. His wife, Anna Elizabeth later remarried Nicolaas Everhardus Jonas, apparently also from the Malmesbury district.
Some of this information is from an inscription on a grave stone located in the Riebeeck Kasteel cemetery. The stone was laid in honor of Hendrik Lodewijk's grand-child born to Anna Maria.
There also is reference to Hendrik Lodewijk's widow in the last will and testament of his father, Johan Wilhelm Hein. These Dutch Heins were prominent citizens of from Brielle and Rockanje Holland. The family grave is in the cemetery at Rockanje and recorded in the book "Rockanje Allerhande" by H. van der Graaf, also described in detail in the Dutch "Blauwe Boekje".
