About Hendrik Andries van Aswegen
DE MOORDEN AAN VAALRIVIER
His death and the massacre of his young family is described in detail in the booklet Herinneringen uit den tijd der Vrijstaatsche Voortrekkers by PS van Heerden. See Chapter 7: De Moorden aan Vaalrivier P.S. van Heerden, Herinneringen uit den tijd der Vrijstaatsche Voortrekkers (Stellenbosch: Pro Ecclesia, 1908), p.33-40. A transcription of the above chapter is available here: https://dalenefowler.wordpress.com/2019/04/28/de-moorden-aan-vaalri...
PLACE OF DEATH
The place of death is incorrectly given as "Kalkfontein" on his death notice. He died at Kop[s]fontein, a farm which was located in the district of Bloemfontein at the time. Kop[s]fontein is currently located in the Christiana-district. "Kalkfontein" was the name of the farm to which his wife, Geertruida Elizabeth FOWLER, fled after the massacre, together with their youngest child. See references above.
