I have not seen the Castle Garden record for Christian and Anna, but I would love to see it. It is strange that Hendrika was listed as a boy because she was also listed as a boy on the ship when they came to America. Do you have the ship’s manifest? On the ship there is a listing for a Janna who was less than a year old. (I think the following is right.) Janna died about two weeks after they came to America. I found reference to her death on the 1880 Census Mortality Schedule for Grand Rapids, Michigan. It appears she died of Membranous Croup and it says she contracted it in the Atlantic Ocean.
There are stories about Hendrika. One of my cousins calls her “hot pants.” She also told me there were rumors about her having an affair with John Ball, but I assume it was a son of John Ball, because I think he was much older than her, but I really don’t know. Hendrika was married to Harm Wolbers and then to John Henreksen. Did you know that she was married to Harm on October 20, 1891, and Chris, their son was born six days later? Another relative called me many years ago (Joanne Huyser, not sure how she's related) & said she heard that Hendrika was married to John Ball. I said I had never found anything to connect them so I called Marvin, Bruce's grandfather & my uncle. When I told him, he laughed & said, "You mean she ran around with him!" (Pam Bukela, June 2012)
