In about 1854 Henry A. Dixon; a young man of nineteen years became acquainted with Elder Leonard I. Smith from Salt Lake City, Utah, and was taught the Gospel of Jesus Christ. After being baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints John Henry Dixon told young Henry, "that inasmuch as you have gone in direct opposition to my wishes you must try the world on your own".
In April of 1864 Henry A. Dixon said his last good bye to his Mother. She died in Uitenhage on September 23, 1865. His father returned to Grahamstown to live with his widowed daughter Anne.
