About Henry Augustus Baunach

An obituary from the "Morning Bulletin" of Wednesday 14 October 1942:

"Death Of Mr. H. Baunach. Mr H. Baunach, who was a well known figure in the Central District for many years, passed away recently at the age of 73. Born in Condamine, in South-east Queensland, in 1869, he was in his youth a stockman on a large cattle station. In 1889 he began farming in the Maranoa district under the Old Homsetead Act. To keep the place going he and his brothers learnt shearing. In March, 1884, he decided to relinquish farming and go shearing, and removed to the Clermont district, where reports had been received of good yields of alluvial gold. Eventually he settled, on the desert, 30 miles north of Jericho, where he remained for six years. At that time the sheep on the holding were the only ones in the desert coun- try, but just prior to the beginning of the present century a great deal of the country was purchased for relief purposes, and sheep were brought from the vast area of the West to take the place of cattle that had previously been raised there. During his six years in the desert Mr. Baunach acquired, with his uncle, two blocks of country, one comprising 60 square miles and the other 30 square miles. The smaller property was partly infested with a bush named the heart-leaf poison. But he was disappointed in his venture on the desert property. After four years he left to go further west, and for many years followed all kinds of sta- tion work in the Mitchell district. He was a great bushman, and some of his stone-pitched overshot dams in the West still stand as a monument to his work. His wife predeceased him about two years ago. He is survived by one son, Mr A. Baunach, West Street, Rockhampton, and one daughter, Mrs. Williams, of Elalia, North Coast Line. His remains were interred in the North Rockhampton cemetery."
