About Henry Becher

Henry Becher was the eldest son of Fane Becher and Susan D'abridgecourt and was born about 1573. He inherited his father's lands in Cork, Ireland.

According to Burke's he married Mary Lyon, daughter of William Lyon, Bishop of Cork, Cloyne & Ross on the 14th March 1586 when he would only have been 13. It was not uncommon for children of the gentry to marry very young in this era, but no record of this marriage has so far been found [although if it took place in Ireland there are few early records surviving].

It is not clear either how much time Henry Becher actually spent in Ireland. His parents lived in Hampshire [and no other branch of Bechers are known to have] so it is likely that he is the Henry Becher of Hampshire who attended Braesnose College, Oxford, matriculating 14 Feb 1588-9 aged 15, BA 19 Feb 1590/1, MA 1595.

It is often claimed that Henry Becher was Lord President of Minster but there is no mention of his name on the official list.

Henry Becher and his wife Mary had many financial dealings with the Earl of Cork. Many of these are recorded in the Lismore Papers so it can be ascertained that Henry Becher was still alive in 1624 and his wife Mary [nee Lyon] until at least 1619.
