About Henry Compton, Bishop of London

Birth: 1628 Death: Jul. 7, 1713
Henry Compton was born in 1623 to Spencer Compton, the Earl of Northampton. Henry was the youngest of six children. His brothers and including Henry, all served with there father during the English Civil War. After the Death of his father at the Battle of Hopton Heath, Henry left the army. Henry had been in the Cavalry, along with his brother Sir William. After the War was over, After Henry left the army he made a career in the Church. He was educated at Oxford. After may years being devoted to the Church, he became the Bishop of London. Henry lived an extraordinary life, he had been a soldier, a politicain, a bishop and a botanist.
In Roses Among The Thorns we read that "(h)e insisted that Willam Penn's charter (for Pennsylvania) guarantee that the government provide clergy whenever 20 inhabitants desired the services of the Church of England"
Note: He adopted his 2nd Cousin, John Compton II, when John's father died.

Sr. Henry was a cousin of John Compton II and after the death of John II's father, John Compton I, who died in battle, Sir Henry and his wife Rachel Howard adopted the 14 year old John I.

Henry Compton was a beneficiary in the will (8 Oct. 1688) of his brother-in-law, 4th Baronet Sir Hugh Cholmely, described by Sir Hugh as, Lord Bishop of London, my best friend and beloved brother.
