About Henry Hauenstein

Leon Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa Thursday, August 20, 1925

HENRY HAUENSTEIN, eldest son of JOHN and HARRIET HAUENSTEIN, was born at Elkhart, Ind., December 24, 1847, and departed this life at the home of his daughter, MRS. ALTA BAKER, at Grand River, Iowa, August 13, 1925, aged 77 years, 7 months and 19 days. When HENRY was 12 years of age, his family came to Decatur County, Iowa, to make their home. Those were real pioneer days in this part of Iowa. MR. HAUENSTEIN had very vivid memories of the ox teams and the long trips to the grist mill in Ottumwa, Iowa. He loved to tell of those old times and the children of this automobile and radio age can scarcely realize the hardships endured nor the patience required to make a good living in those far-away days, but those times produced some splendid citizens that loved home and their country and their God.

On March 27, 1870, MR. HAUENSTEIN was united in holy wedlock to MISS EMILY ELIZABETH BENEFIEL. Nine children were born to this union. Eight of the children survive him. Two of the happy family circle have preceded the father into the spirit world, the loving wife and mother hearing the Great Roll Call, October 25, 1905, and FRED dying January 20, 1920.

Since the death of the wife, MR. HAUENSTEIN has made his home with his two daughters, ALTA and BELL. The day before his sudden death, he had arrived with his daughter, BELL, from St. Louis to spend the fall months with his daughter, MRS. BIRT BAKER. He seemed to be in unusual good health and spirits and had spent a happy day on the reunion grounds, greeting a multitude of old time neighbors and friends. About ten o'clock p.m. the end came without warning and seemingly without pain or a struggle.

MR. HAUENSTEIN was a carpenter by trade and a craftsman who knew and loved the materials of his art. He prided himself on his knowledge of the various woods and their several good qualities. Some time before his death, he was speaking about the beauty and usefulness of black walnut and remarked that he would like to have his casket made of that wonderful wood.

Sometime in his young manhood, MR. HAUENSTEIN became much interested in spiritual affairs and attended the meetings held by the Rev. John Hogue, who adhered to the Holiness Association. To that teaching MR. HAUENSTEIN was attracted and perhaps made confession of Christ in that fellowship. He never joined an organized church, but attended all churches and read much in the Holy Scriptures. One of the precious memories that his children have is that their father loved to sing them to sleep using that fine old hymn, "There is a Fountain Filled With Blood."

MR. HAUENSTEIN is survived by eight children. They are, MRS. BELL RIDDLE, of St. Louis, Mo.; CHARLES HAUENSTEIN, of Scranton, Iowa; JOHN S., and MORRIS S., of Washington State; MISS EVA HAUENSTEIN and MRS. LOTTIE FINCH, of California; LAWRENCE HAUENSTEIN, of Tulsa, Okla., and MRS. BIRT BAKER, of Grand River, Iowa. He also leaves two brothers, two sisters, a number of grandchildren besides numerous other relatives and friends.

The funeral services were held from the Grand River M.E. Church at 3 o'clock, Sunday afternoon, Aug. 16, the Rev. (*can't read), conducting the service and interment was made in the Leon Cemetery.
