It became apparent that virtually all of the early Kitchen families of Upper Canada, (the Province of Ontario), of the Province of New Brunswick, and of Columbia County, Pennsylvania, were related. They were aIl settled by the children of the five sons of Henry Kitchen of Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Most of Henry's descendants had left New Jersey in the 1790's. After the exodus of the children of John of Mansfield to Upper Canada before I820, it is difficult to find any Kitchen families descended from Henry who were still in New Jersey. Henry Kitchen had two brothers, Thomas and James. brother Thomas by 1778 or before. Presuming a necessary period of social acclimatization, a period of 1770-1790 has been suggested as a probable period for their settling in Hunterdon County. Very few settlers would have been in Hunterdon prior to 1770. Henry Kitchen was classified as a 'carpenter' in an early land deed. Henry and his brothers acquired much land in early New Jersey, some of it through marriage. Henry had acquired the capital to build one of the earliest sawmills in New Jersey, his brother was a county justice and 'gentleman', and both men had enough stature in the early Amwell community to be elected as the two 'Freemen' to represent the township, This evidence, in addition to other items which could be mentioned, points to a fairly solid middle cIass origin, American Quaker records and indexes have been exhaustively searched with no reference to Henry Kitchen or his brothers or no candidate who could be a possible parent . There was a 'Thomas Kitchen', who settled in the Philadelphia area in the 1680's, but his children and will are well documented and no link has been found. There was a 'William Kitchen', Quaker, born about the same time as Henry Kitchen, who settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, just across the Delaware River from Henry and his brothers in New Jersey. His story is well-documented in Bucks County history. He appeared there, as a destitute weaver, about the same time that Henry and his brothers appeared in Amwell Township. William was taken in by a sympathetic Quaker, married into the family, and prospered. So far no link has been found between the two sets of Kitchen families.
