About Henry Leland
Source for Leland Family
The Leland magazine: or, A genealogical record of Henry Leland, and his descendants ... embracing nearly every person of the name of Leland in America, from 1653 to 1850 (Google eBook) by Sherman Leland. Printed by Wier & White, 1850.
Henry Leland (abt 1625 - 1680) of Medfield and Sherborn
Henry Leland's first child Hopestill was born on his passage from England or very soon after his arrival in America, for it appears from the church records of Dorchester , that Hopestill, son of Henry and Margaret was baptized in May 1653. The births of his other four children are entered in the town records of Medfield. They were born before the existence of Sherborn as a town not in Medfield but on the land.
His will was dated 1680.
In the Leland Line, Henry seems to have been the ancestor of all in America with this surname, except for one family which adopted the surname, and one other family, whose origin is not known. He doubtless came to America in 1652, as the records of the church in Dorchester show that he joined the church in 1653, and no earlier record has been found. After remaining a short time in Dorchester, he moved to Sherburne where he lived for the remainder of his life.
His parents seem to be unknown. If you have evidence for his parents or where he immigrated from, please add.
Henry Leland was born in England about 1625. He died on 4 Apr 1680 in Sherborn. He married Margaret Badcock, the sister of Robert Badcock of Milton.
Henry paid 3 shillings as part of Medfield's contribution to Harvard College in 1678.
He lived first in Dorchester. In 1654 he became one of the first settlers of Sherborn.
Henry wrote his will on 27 Mar 1680. He mentions his wife Margaret, his son Eleazer, Bethia Twitchell (to whom he left 40 shillings when she came of age), his oldest son Hopestill, his daughter Experience Colburne, his son Ebenezer, his brother Brazier, his son Eleazer, his brother Robert Badcock.
Henry came to America in 1652.

Henry Leland's parents and origins are unknown. He had no known Siblings. Savage conflated his son Hopestill Leland as his father and invented two sisters Lydia and Experience. None of these people existed. This is explained in the following source published in 2000 by the NEGHS:
Smith, Dean Crawford, and Melinde Lutz Sanborn. "Leland" in The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton 1878-1908. (Boston, Massachusetts: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2000), Part IV 452 f
