Henry Edmond Lewis, Jr.

Henry7 Lewis (Henry6, Henry5, John4, Richard3, Henry2, Richard1) (#3317) was born in Spotsylvania Co., Virginia 1724.(18) Birth site: St. George Parish. Henry died 17 Aug 1804 Madison Co., Virginia, at 80 years of age.

He married twice. He married Anne Buford Racoon Ford, Culpeper Co., Virginia, Abt 1755.(19) (Anne Buford is #4458.) Anne was born Culpeper Co., Virginia 1738. Anne(20) was the daughter of John Buford and Judith Early. Anne died 1787 - 1794 in Virginia, at 49 years of age. At 19 years of age Anne became the mother of John Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 1757.(21) At 23 years of age Anne became the mother of James Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 1761. At 24 years of age Anne became the mother of William Lewis Maj Culpeper Co., Virginia, 06 Apr 1763.(22) At 27 years of age Anne became the mother of Thomas Buford Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 02 Sep 1765. At 29 years of age Anne became the mother of Simeon Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 1767.(23) Anne became the mother of Nancy Ann Lewis Est 1769. At 33 years of age Anne became the mother of Mary Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 1771.(24) At 33 years of age Anne became the mother of Abraham Lewis Capt. Culpeper Co., Virginia, 23 Jun 1772. Anne became the mother of Martha Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, Abt 1773. At 39 years of age Anne became the mother of Frances Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 1777.(25) He married Catherine Twyman Madison Co., Virginia, 27 Nov 1794. (Catherine Twyman is #4461.) Catey was the daughter of William Twyman and Winifred Cowherd. Catey died 21 Mar 1825 Madison Co., Virginia.

Henry became the father of Judith Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia. He bought property Culpeper Co., Virginia, 7 Aug 1753. At 33 years of age Henry became the father of John Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 1757.(26) At 35 years of age Henry became the father of Henry Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 1759.(27) At 37 years of age Henry became the father of James Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 1761. At 38 years of age Henry became the father of William Lewis Maj Culpeper Co., Virginia, 06 Apr 1763.(28) At 41 years of age Henry became the father of Thomas Buford Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 02 Sep 1765. He bought property Culpeper Co., Virginia, 19 Jun 1766. He bought property Culpeper Co., Virginia, 19 Jun 1766. At 43 years of age Henry became the father of Simeon Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 1767.(29) Henry became the father of Nancy Ann Lewis Est 1769. He bought property Culpeper Co., Virginia, 2 Sep 1769. Alexander Campbell and Daniel Campbell, Merchants in Glasgow, North Britain, to Henry Lewis, Culpeper County, 411 acres in Culpeper County. Witnessed by William Carr of Prince William County, attorney-in-fact. Lease and release. Recorded September 21, 1769.

At 47 years of age Henry became the father of Mary Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 1771.(30) At 47 years of age Henry became the father of Abraham Lewis Capt. Culpeper Co., Virginia, 23 Jun 1772. Henry became the father of Martha Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, Abt 1773. He bought property in Madison Co, Virginia, Oct 1776. At 53 years of age Henry became the father of Frances Lewis Culpeper Co., Virginia, 1777.(31) Henry registered to pay taxes Culpeper Co., Virginia, 1783. Upon Henry's death, His estate was administered in Spotsylvania Co., Virginia, 1785. Administrator of his father's estate.

Occupation: Planter/Revolutionary War Veteran.

Henry was a Captain in the Revolutionary War (see DAR #277744). He built his home about 4 miles above Criglersville on the side of the Double Top Mountain. After Henry married his second wife, they built their home near Criglersville. The 1787 Culpeper County, VA tax list "C" shows that Henry Lewis was taxed for: 7 slaves over the age of 16, 11 slaves under the age of 16, 8 horses, and 26 cattle. Madison County Homes, by Vee Dove, Copyright 1975, Provided by Ellen L. John. The Old Tom Finks Cabin Finks Hollow lies to the west of Syria on Route 648. In what is presently called The Tom Finks House, a date of 1792 was found on an attic timber, but the name of the builder and actual construction date is unknown.

In a deed dated 1773 and recorded on February 18, 1773, from Henry Lewis and Ann, his wife, to John Thomas Sr., is mention of an unknown number of acres of land "granted to Henry Lewis by a deed from the proprietor of the Northern Neck office would be that of Lord Fairfax.

Additions were made to the Henry Lewis land in October 1776, when he was deeded 68 acres by Ambrose Yarbrough, "beginning on the south side of a branch of the Robinson River, leaving river, going to south side of Double Top Mountain...." This land was a grant from Lord Fairfax to Yarbrough.

Fisher Rice and Agnes, his wife, deeded 104 acres to Henry Lewis in June 1786, recorded October 16, 1786, lying on a "north prong of the Robinson River, boundary with William Dickens on the side of a mountain."

In 1786, Henry Lewis bought 57 acres of John Clore land lying "in Culpeper County at the Great Mountains and on the waters of the Robinson." This Henry Lewis must have been a descendant of the Henry Lewis who came up from Spotsylvania through Culpeper to Madison.

In 1787, Henry Lewis (II) and Ann, his wife, of Culpeper County deeded to Robert Hart of Spotsylvania County 350 acres in Spotsylvania purchased by Henry Lewis (I), the elder.

According to a will, Henry Lewis (III) and his wife, Catherine (Catey), lived in Toms Mountain area. He died August 17, 1804. Records show eleven children: Abraham;Judah married Thomas Kirtley; Henry; William; Nancy married Erasmus Chapman on January 6, 1785; Polly married John Kirtley; Simeon; Martha; John; James; and Frances.

Reference to this mountain home as the Abe Lewis place has been passed down through the years. Did Abe Lewis build the house on land given him by his father, or did Henry Lewis (III) build the house and leave it to Abe, or was the house built by Henry Lewis (II) when he acquired the land about 1770? Records show Abraham and William Lewis owning over 1000 acres of land in this area in the early 1800's.

On July 10, 1806, Abraham Lewis married Sally Gaines Graves, daughter of Edmund Gaines. Her first husband was Elijah Graves (1773-1800) and to this union was born one son, Thomas W. Graves. This Abraham Lewis is thought to be the son of Henry (III).
