About Henry Washington Louis
Henry Washington Louis, 86, known as dean of the California apparel industry, died Tuesday at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Louis was educated in San Diego and San Francisco and came to Los Angeles in 1882 when he worked for the pioneer clothing firm of Jacoby Bros., located near the Plaza.
Thirteen years later he joined with Daniel J. Brownstein and Philip A. Newmark in organizing a wholesale apparel concern and began the manufacture of shirts, outing and work clothing. He was still board chairman for the Brownstein-Louis Co. at the time of his death.
The pioneer apparel executive was founder president of the Pacific Coast Garment Association and the Los Angeles Wholesale Dry Goods Association, forerunner of the California Apparel Creators. -Los Angeles Times 10/22/1953
