Marriage announced in "The Australian" of Saturday 12 December 1846:
"MARRIED. Oakes, Richard, Esq., of the McLeay River, to Susan, fourth daughter of William Johnston, Esq., of the Manning River, by the Rev. C. Woodward, at Port Macquarie, on the 12th October. "
William Johnston and his wife, Isabella Cunningham, were pioneer free settlers who lived around Bathurst, NSW, and then around Wingham, NSW.
