Henry was a farmer and also carried freight. He was one of those stalwarts who was asked to drive an ox team back to Winter Quarters to help bring some of the pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley.

He was a fashionable dresser and always wore a bearskin coat in the winter. He loved to ride horses and was a skilled rider. He fought the Indians in the war and skirmishes.

Sold kitchen cabinets when he was young, bought a 60-acre farm, started a drayage business (cart transport). In winters he worked at the Fremont-Idaho Sugar company. One year, he worked construction on a road from flagg ranch to Lander, Wyoming.

In the summer of 1925, a representative from the International Harvester Company in Chicago asked Henry if they could place an experimental harvester on his farm to see how it would perform. Henry agreed and executives from the International Harvester Company came out to see the harvester operate. The Vice President of the company thought Henry's wheat was some of the best he'd ever seen and asked Henry if he'd be willing to move to western Kansas to operate a large experimental "Tractor Ranch" there. The family moved in 1926.
