Henry John Pellew

Charles Jessop, nephew, aged 14 years, b. Chiswick, Middlesex, was with the family at Census in 1861. Henry was living with first wife Elizabeth in 1871 with no other family, but after her death in 1875 he quickly married his second wife Alice Tollinton.  By 1881, he was with Alice and three children:- Henry J. Pellew, aged 12 yrs, born Brixton; Charles Pellew, aged 11 yrs, born Brixton; Violet B. Pellew, aged 8 yrs, born St. Georges, Belgravia.  None of these children were registered as Pellew in the Birth Registers. However, there were Henry John T. Renfrew (not Renfew), Jun 1868, Lambeth;  Charles Renfrew, Sep 1869, Lambeth; Violet Bessie Renfrew, Mar 1873, St. George, Hanover Square, clearly the same children.  Henry was married as Henry John T. R. Pellew in 1892, Lambeth; Violet Bessie Pellew in 1899. Lambeth; whilst Charles was recorded as Charles Pellew in 1901, unmarried, 31 years, Accountant, step-son of George Swift and Alice, who had married George after the death of Henry John Pellew. Clearly the children were registered as Renfews but subsequently took the name Pellew.  They appear to be the children of Alice Tollinton from her relationship with a Charles. H. Renfew, who was recorded in 1871 as "Renfew", the head of family, aged 41 years, born St. Lukes, Commercial Clerk, General Merchants, 10, Sutherland Rd., St. George, Hanover Square, and living with Alice Renfew, aged 23 yrs, wife, born Nottingham, and sons Henry John Renfew,  2 yrs, and Charles Renfew, 1 yr, both born Lambeth. An Alice Hannah Beatrice Renfew was baptised 30 May 1866, Saint John the Evangelist, Paddington, parents Charles Henry Renfew, 11, The Terrace, Kilburn, Gentleman, and Alice.  This Alice died at Lambeth in 1870, aged 4 years.
