About Henry Smart

SOURCE: findagrave.com

According to the 1850 US Census, Henry was born in New Jersey in 1780.

He married Mercy House on April 11, 1809 in Columbiana County, Ohio and is found in the tax records of that county from 1817-1819 and 1826-1833 as well as the US Census records for 1820 and 1830.

Henry became one of the first land buyers in Bloom Township, Wood County, Ohio when he purchased 240 acres in Sections 29 and 30. A history of Wood County notes that he bought the property on April 24, 1833 and was living there, a mile and a half west of Bairdstown, by May 4, 1834. Deeds at the county courthouse, though, show that the patents were not granted until September 30, 1834.

A number of the other settlers in the area were from Columbiana County, and when the township was organized in April 1836, he was elected Trustee, along with Mahlon Whitacre and Ora Baird.

Two years later in July 1838, Henry sold the 80 acre "tract and premises" in Section 29 to his son Samuel for $600. In March 1846 he donated half an acre of Section 30 to School District No. 9, and in December 1848 he sold an adjacent half acre to the Trustees of Bloom Township for $1, the land to be used as a cemetery. Records do not show the sale of the remainder of the land in Section 30, but it appears that 80 acres were each conveyed to sons Charles and Henry as they subsequently sold the land.

The 1850 US Census shows Henry living with his son Abel in nearby Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio. His other children are established by the probate papers of his son Charles. These papers also document Henry's funeral expenses from January 1851.

Although I have not found documentation of Henry's burial, Stony Barter Cemetery was created when he sold the land for it, and Bloom was also the township where his son was brought to be buried three months later.

A note about Henry's wife Mercy. . . .

From US Census records, it appears that Mercy died between 1830 and 1840. Although her name is given as House in her marriage record, it is interesting to note a Jacob and William Houts in the Columbiana County 1820 US Census.

In the 1880 US Census and other vital statistic reports, her children report that she was born in Ohio or Maryland. Her maiden name was indexed as Free, Hensen and Hansen.

N.B Green Township, Columbiana County became part of Mahoning County in 1846.
