About Henry Evans Spencer
Mayor of Cincinnati. Born on a pioneer settlement at Columbia, now part of the East End of Cincinnati, he became the first Cincinnati native to represent the city as Mayor. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and became an attorney in Cincinnati. Spencer gained fame as an orator because of his eloquent deliverance of courtroom speeches. A member of the Whig Party, he also became the editor of the Whig newspaper in 1838. He became a member of the Cincinnati City Council and was elected as the city's Mayor in 1843. He served four consecutive terms until 1851. After he left office, he became president of the Fireman's Insurance Company and a member of the American Colonization Society. In 1856, he became affiliated with the Democratic Party when the Whigs dissolved in 1856. He died in Cincinnati in 1882 when he was 74 years old.
