About Henry Trent, Jr.

Initial Immigrant from England, possibly from the small village of Clara in the province of Stafford. He was the son of French Immigrants. He came to Norfolk, Virginia sometime before 1673, as the records show that in that year, he owned two-hundred acres of land in Henrico County.

Henrico was the relocation site of the settlement at Jamestown.

Pat Adams writes: "The earliest mention

Pat Adams writes: "The earliest mention of Henry Trent in Virginia records is 1673, when he claimed headrights to 200 acres on the James River in Henrico County for bringing himself and three other people to Virginia. "The London Company granted "headrights" to encourage immigration to Virginia. If a person paid for his voyage to Virginia, he received 50 acres of land. If he paid for others as well, he got 50 acres for each of them. "It would be wrong to conclude that Henry Trent arrived in America shortly before obtaining the grant in 1673. Often headrights were claimed long after the immigrants came to Virginia. And if a person traveled to England, then returned to Virginia, they could claimheadrights to their second voyage as well. Transport to Virginia from another colony qualified as well. "On Nov. 7, 1673, the day Henry Trent receives his 200, his future father-in-law, Henry Sherman, receives 228 acres in Henrico County, though on the south side of the James River. "This account is heavily indebted to the research of Barbara R. Marsh and Ron Walters." From Colonial Wills of Henrico County, VA, Part One 1654-1737, Page 54: "Will of Henry Trent, Sr. Of Varina Parish. Note for Henri Trent and Henry Trent, Jr.

This is a case of using the preponderance of evidence to place this man and wife. The date and place of birth are not proved by any primary source that I have seen. Henry and Mary may have been born in England and possibly came to Virginia with their son Henry. Some sources state that he was a son of a French immigrant to England. This would connect him to the Huguenot's and their migration from France to England and finally to Virginia. One online Huguenot site names a Trent in a "List of Manakintowne Huguenot Settlers", which was published in "The Huguenot" in 1933. Do to the great number of references, it is likely that this couple are the parents of Henry Trent [Jr.] who married Elizabeth Sherman, who most researchers believe is the immigrant ancestor in the Trent line. (Don Trent 9/22/05) Huguenots began coming to Virginia as early as 1620. In 1700, four ships arrived at the mouth of the James River and the Rappahannock, east of present-day Richmond, Virginia. French Huguenots, having fled religious persecution, had lived in England and done services for the king. They were granted lands in the New World for a permanent home where they had the freedom to worship as they pleased. West of Richmond, many founded a colony on the site of a village deserted by the Monacan Indians. Source: "The Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin In the Colony of Virginia" is a society of the descendants of that colony and French Protestants who came to Virginia before 1786 and settled in Manakintown. In a letter: "Inhabitants Of King William Parish, in Manacan Town, Virginia, to Mr. Nearne." Next is a list: "June, 1744. - A List of King William Parish ." In this list is a Henry Trent.
