About Henry Brougham Vaux

Henry Brougham VAUX, son of Richard Vaux and Jane Walsh, born in 1834 in Stamford,Lincolnshire, was living with his parents in Spa Road, Bermondsey,London, in 1849 when both parents died of cholera within 5 days of each other. This left H.B. Vaux and his two little brothers orphans. The two little brothers were sent to a workhouse in York, but H.B.Vaux stayed in London to fend for himself. He got into trouble, and was deported to Fremantle Australia as a convict on the ship York When had up before the Old Bailey he had taken the alias William Cressy, and he was deported under this name. He kept it for the rest of his life. After doing his time in Western Australia he married Ellen Chuck, dau of Edward and Eliza Chuck on 15/10/1870 in Fremantle. H.B. Vaux kept his alias of William CRESSY for the rest of his life, so all the desecendants of William and Ellen now have the surname Cressy. William and Ellen lived in Albany, West Aust. for a few years, then moved over to Tamworth, in NSW.

Notes added by Lorna Lindsey, born Lorna Wynne Cressy. Henry Brougham Vaux, alias William Cressy, was my great-grandfather. My grandfather was Walsh Wynn Vaux CRESSY -he went to the Boer War as a NSW Trooper, and then came to NZ in the early 1900s to look for work. He got into the timber milling business in the central North Island, and was a mill manager for many years. Eventually he moved to Levin. He was farming for a few years, and later worked for the Levin Borough Council as their animal control officer. He married Mary Ellen Geange in Mangaweka,
