This log kept by Henry Chapman Walker while midshipman on HMS Imaum 1860-1861 and while midshipman and acting sub-lieutenant on HMS Barracouta 1861-1864, serving on the West Indian Station. It includes many maps and charts together with biographical notes and career details relating to Commander Walker and his original passing certificate for the rank of lieutenant 1863.

Henry Chapman Walker was born at Airey Hill, Whitby, in 1843, the second son of James Walker and Elizabeth Walker. He entered the Royal Navy in 1856. He received his sub-lieutenant's commission in 1863 and was flag lieutenant to Commodore Heath, Senior Naval Officer, during the Abyssinian Expedition, 1867, being mentioned in despatches. He retired from the navy in 1881 and was granted the rank of commander. He married Olympia Malaine Cecile, daughter of J Claude Mareschel of Menteley, France, in 1880 and lived in High Stakesby, where he died in 1886. HMS Imaum was a 74-gun 3rd rate ship built at the Honourable East India Company's shipyards at Bombay in 1826 for Sayyid Said, the Imaum of Muscat, and named by him Liverpool. He presented her to the Royal Navy in 1836, when she was renamed HMS Imaum. She was hulked in 1842 and during the period of the log was the receiving ship at Jamaica. HMS Barracouta was a paddle sloop built in 1851 (the last sea-going paddler laid down for the Navy) and was broken up in 1882.
This collection was deposited in September 1938 by D W Atkinson of Alton, Hampshire, nephew of Henry Chapman Walker.
