About Henry Davis Ward, Jr.

Dave Ward was on the smartest, funniest, men on earth. He grew up in Buffalo, New York, graduated from Kenmore High School, and joined the Navy in officer training, which was the V12 unit, and went to MIT in 1943, graduated in 1946 as an Ensign, and was stationed at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. After leaving the Navy in the Reserve Unit, he went to work as an Aeronautical Engineer at Glenn L. Martin Co. in Middle River, Md. Not wanting to be moved all over the country, he joined his brother, Bill, at the FXHooper Co. in Glen Arm, Md. as a mechanical engineer in the container machinery business.

Bobby and he met in May 1948 and married in August 1950. He was the finest husband and father anyone could wish for.

In 1961, Dave, Bobby and family moved to Cherry Hill, NJ, where Dave became Chief Engineer of the Langston Co.. They made a lot of good friends there, built a house, but moved back to Baltimore in 1966. Dave then became Vice-President in charge of Engineering for his brother Bill's company, Ward Machinery.

The largest World War II officer training program was a partnership between the U.S. Navy & 131 American colleges & universities. These schools supplied 60,000 Navy & Marine Corps officers during periods of national crises.

The Naval V-12 program was established by the War Department on university campuses during World War II to provide the Navy with a continuous supply of officers. Northwestern's V-12 unit was formed in July, 1943. The course for pre-officer candidates who entered as freshmen consisted of four terms of sixteen weeks each. As freshmen, the students were required to take classes in math, English, physics, engineering, naval organization, physical training, and historical backgrounds of the war. After the first year, they specialized in one of five areas: engineering, deck, supply, medical or dental officers. Students obtained the equivalent of two years of college work in one and one-half years. Graduates of the program were sent to midshipman's school for 120 days, after which they were commissioned ensigns in the Naval Reserve.

Martin State Airport began in 1929 as an airplane production facility built by Glenn L. Martin, an aviation designer and constructor.

Glenn L. Martin began manufacturing aircraft in the early days of aviation at the beginning of the 20th century and went on to become one of the leading military airplane manufacturers in the United States. He retained control of the company for 40 years, hiring skilled engineers along the way, including some who would establish their own successful aircraft companies—Donald Douglas, William Boeing, and James McDonnell among them.

Before and during World War II, the Glen L. Martin Aircraft Company produced the B-10 and B-26 bombers, the China Clipper, and the Martin Mars planes at the facility. Runways also were added during the war period.

From 1941 to 1945, the Glen L. Martin Aircraft Co. built the Mars aircraft for the U.S. Navy to be used for long-range reconnaissance or cargo transport. The planes, known as flying boats, were propeller driven and capable of landing and taking off on water.

In 1961, the Martin Company merged with the American Marietta Corporation to form the Martin Marietta Corporation. The State of Maryland purchased 747 acres of the Airport in 1975 from the Martin Marietta Corporation.
