About Henry de Grey, Baron Grey of Codnor

Henry de Grey of Greys Thurrock

Family

Sir Henry was the son of Richard de Grey (born Thurrock, Essex, c. 1140 and married c. 1157 [Wikipedia is not trustworthy on birth date or place]) and probably a great-grandson of Anchetil de Greye of Rotherfield Greys in Oxfordshire. He is the common ancestor of innumerable members of the British aristocracy, and was the progenitor of a considerable number of noble houses bearing the surname Grey or Gray; Sir Henry's descendants in the direct male line went on to be ennobled with no less than eighteen peerages, including eleven substantive baronies, a viscountcy, three earldoms (Kent, Tankerville and Grey), a marquessate and two dukedoms. Furthermore, through marriage Sir Henry's descendants in the female line exist in all ranks of the British aristocracy, and are countless but include the Barons Audley, Barons Revelstoke, Barons Northbrook, Barons Howick, Barons Dacre, Barons Willoughby de Eresby, Earl of Lindsey, the Earls of Malmesbury, Earls of Westmoreland, Earls of Essex, Earls of Durham, Earls of Cromer, Earls of Elgin, Earls of Bridgewater, the Earls of Ashburnham, the Marquesses of Lindsey and the Dukes of Somerset and Ancaster, amongst many others.

Life

In 1195 he had been granted the Manor of Thurrock in Essex which later became known as Grays Thurrock (or simply Grays), which he bought from Isaac the Jew and his son Josce. To commemorate this connection, on 11 June 2013 (the 808th anniversary of the charter), a green Thurrock heritage plaque was unveiled to de Grey.[1] Before 1201 he was also granted the Manor of Codnor, Derbyshire, and in 1216 was also granted by King Henry III of England the Manor of Grimston in Nottinghamshire.

Marriage and issue

Around 1199 he married at Thurrock, Essex, Isolda Bardolf (Hoo, Kent, c. 1168 - bef. 18 June 1246), also known as Iseaude, sister and co-heiress of Robert Bardolf of Codnor in Derbyshire, and daughter of Hugh or Robert Bardolf of Codnor, Derbyshire (son of Hugo Bardol, born in 1125), and Isobel Aquillion, by whom he had these sons:

  • Sir Richard de Grey of Codnor Derbyshire, ancestor of the Barons Grey of Codnor
  • Sir John de Grey of Shirland Derbyshire, ancestor of the Barons Grey of Wilton and Barons Grey of Ruthyn,[2] and through the Ruthyn Greys he was ancestor of John Grey of Groby, the first husband of Elizabeth Woodville, who later married Edward IV. In this connection, Sir John was the ancestor of the Viscounts Lisle, the Grey Marquesses of Dorset and of Lady Jane Grey. It is from Sir John's descendants the Greys of Wilton that Gray's Inn takes its name.
  • William de Grey of Cavendish, Suffolk, of Landford, Nottinghamshire and of Sandiacre, Derbyshire, ancestor of the Greys of Merton, Norfolk and a remote ancestor of the Barons Walsingham
  • Henry de Grey
  • Hugh de Grey (born Chillingham, Northumberland, c. 1203), father of John de Grey, born in Scotland, and grandfather of Thomas de Grey of Heton (Heton, Northumberland, circa 1266 - Angus, Scotland, 1310), whose son Sir Thomas de Grey of Heaton (circa 1297 - bef. 12 March 1343/1344) was taken prisoner by the Scots at Bannockburn and who was the ancestor of all three creations of the Earls of Tankerville, and the Earls Grey

1. HENRY de Grey of Grays Thurrock, Essex (-1219). m as her first husband, ISOLDA, daughter of --- (-after 1 Jul 1225). There are contrary indications concerning the parentage of Isolda. “Jord Foliot Isold de Gray et Rad Paynel” swore homage for the lands of “Robti Bardulf avunculi sui”, and accepted security from “Robto Lupo loco Matild Bardulf matris sue que est una herederum predicti Roberti”, dated 1 Jul 1225[1384]. This source suggests that Isolda de Grey was the daughter of the second sister of Robert Bardulf, and co-heir of her uncle. On the other hand, Thomas Stapleton, in his "Observations on the Great Rolls of the Exchequer of Normandy", records that Henry de Grey married "Ysolda...daughter of Hugh Bardolf, sister and one of the co-heirs of Robert Bardolf", that in 1235 she was “remarried to...Reginald de Meandre”, and that in 1246 “Richard de Gray son and heir of Isolda de Gray” swore homage to King Henry III, although he does not cite the source reference[1385]. The birth date of Hugh [I] Bardolf (father of Robert Bardolf) is estimated to before 1135 (see above). Hugh’s children would presumably therefore have been born in [1160/80]. If that date range is correct, the date of Isolda’s second marriage, and also the chronology of the Grey family, suggest that Isolda was more probably Hugh’s granddaughter than his daughter. Another possibility is that the wife of Henry de Grey was Robert’s sister and that “Isold de Gray” who is named in the 1 Jul 1225 source was the couple’s daughter. However, in that case, it is unclear why Isolda’s son Richard would not have been named as the Grey representative of the heirs who are named in 1 Jul 1225.

On balance, it appears more likely that Isolda was Robert Bardolf’s niece, although if that is correct there is no indication of her father’s family. She married secondly (before 1235) Reginald de Meaudre. Henry & his wife had children:

a) RICHARD de Grey of Codnor (-after 1246). Thomas Stapleton, in his "Observations on the Great Rolls of the Exchequer of Normandy", records that in 1246 “Richard de Gray son and heir of Isolda de Gray” swore homage to King Henry III, but he does not cite the source reference[1386]. This reference, if correct, suggests that Richard was his parents’ oldest son. m LUCY de Humez, daughter of JOHN de Humez & his wife ---. Richard & his wife had children:

Bracton records a claim, dated 1229, which involved "Johannem de Segraue et Emmam uxorem eius filiam et heredem…Rogeri de Cauz"[1387]. King Henry III granted "maritagium Emme de Cauz que fuit uxor Johannis de Sedgrave, filii ipsius Stephani" to "Stephano de Sedgrave" dated 2 Nov 1230[1388].

  • JOHN de Grey of Shirland, Derbyshire (-before 18 Mar 1266)
  • WILLIAM de Grey of Sandiacre (no dates) and possibly others.

This reconstruction is somewhat speculative, based on the tradition that Henry de Grey of Codnor's father was a Richard de Grey.
