The Gioeni are a noble family living in ancient times in Catania. They are a princely family descended from the royal dynasty of Anjou, their forefather was a consanguineous Henry or Arrigo of Anjou.

Prince Arrigo (Henrico) of Anjou who, being a relative of King Charles of Anjou, passed to Italy as champion of the same prince for the acquisition of the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily, and according to Paradino killed Manfredo Svevo King of Sicily in battle, therefore he obtained from Charles for wife Beatrice, daughter of the dead Manfred with the dowry of the States of Fiume di Nisi, Calatabiano, Noara, and the Motta di Camastra, and he died in 1270

Three of his sons: Ruberto, Manfredo and Luigi in the massacre of the Sicilian Vespers were saved in the city of Reggio di Calabria by Niccolò Palici and Buonafede Collura, Messinian knights, and then reintegrated into their States by King Pietro of Aragon. Because of the hatred they felt the Sicilian families for the Angevins changed the surname to Gioeni, and they also changed the blazon.The family settled in Sicily following the vespers, enjoyed nobility in Palermo and Catania and had the lordship of 16 fiefs, 4 ducats and 5 principalities.
