A plaque inside the church reads: "Hephzibah J. Townsend
1780-1847
Founded the Wadmalaw and Edisto Female Mite Society, the first home and foreign mission society of Baptist women in the South. By 1811 the society gave $122.50 for the work with the Catawba Indians. In 1818 this building was erected with her funds. She gave it and the cemetery where she was buried to Black Baptists of Edisto Island."

Inscription
West side: "Erected by her children to the memory of Mrs. Hepsibah J. Townsend, daughter of Capt. Daniel Jenkins, widow of Capt. Daniel Townsend, who died on the 4th of March, 1847, in the 67th year of her age."
Northside: "Her character was so strongly cast, and her impulses were so generous, that she was an object of indifference to no one. The poor and the afflicted were special objects of her consideration. By them, her loss is truly felt, and by us who knew her best, she is most lamented."
East side: "From early life, she professed the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and her faith continued firm and constant to the end."
