Herbert and Ellen were married in Weenen, in the colony of Natal, in 1879. They settled in the area and built a farm named 'The South Downs'. This was a bold move. Weenen means weeping in Dutch - referring to a massacre of Boers by Zulus, 40 years earlier. And the Zulu-Boer war occurred in 1879, resulting in a massive defeat of their British force at Isaldwana. Herbert was a very active (and possibly litigous?) farmer, and there are numerous entries in National Archieves of South Africa 1897-1919 on matters such as 'H Blaker wishes to know when crown lands will become available....,' and 'H Blaker complains of the present system....'. He was chairman of the first butter factory founded in South Africa (1899), later become Clover, the country's chief dairy company.
