About Herbert Beryl Finn
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/111709508/herbert-beryl-finn Herbert B. Finn was the son of Sadie (Borgenicht) Finn and Jonathan Finn. Herbert was born in Brooklyn, New York. Herb graduated from City College of New York in 1939. Herbert served in the Army during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart. Herb graduated from Yale University Law School in New Haven, Connecticut in 1947 and worked briefly in Washington, DC. Herb married Ruth Geiger and moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1948. After serving for a time as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Arizona, Herb established a private law practice in Phoenix and eventually became a prominent civil rights lawyer and civic leader. Herb made his biggest mark as a civil rights lawyer in the 1950’s when he represented the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Greater Phoenix Council for Civic Unity and successfully prosecuted a suit that brought desegregation of the Phoenix Union High School District. Herb’s wife, Ruth Geiger Finn, worked tirelessly with Herb on civil rights efforts, fighting against segregated schools and discrimatory businesses. Herb and Ruth were founding members of many civil rights and Jewish organizations and worked and fought for justice together. When Ruth was 50 years old, she graduated from Arizona State University School of Law. Ruth and Herb had two daughters and one son. In October 1979, on their way to Egypt and Israel for two weeks as part of a “peace mission” by the Phoenix Jewish Federation and the United Jewish Appeal, Herb and Ruth stopped over in New York City. On October 27, 1979, after attending “Le Prophete” at the Metropitan Opera with family members, and as they were on their way home and sitting in a parked car, three young armed men robbed the family. During the robbery, one of the robbers shot and killed Herb. Herb’s death was a very sad and unexpected loss to his family and the community.
