About Herman Goldschmidt

  • As of at least 21 April 1854, Herman was associated with a Mr. Loth and was doing business as "Loth, Goldschmidt & Co.'s" at 263 Main Street [Chattenden's Block], in Hartford. See the Hartford Daily Courant, Friday, April 21, 1854, page 3.
  • As of at least 11 January 1860, the partnership of Herman Goldschmidt with Arnstein, Loth & Hartman, who were doing business as "H. Goldschmidt & Co.", was dissolved. Herman now associated himself with Abraham Stern and a Mr. Mandelbaum. The new company would do business as "Goldschmidt, Stern & Mandelbaum". See the Hartford Daily Courant, Saturday, January 21, 1860, page 3.
  • As of at least 12 April 1862, in a newspaper notice. Herman publicly announced that he had entered into a dray & fancy goods business partnership with his brother-in-law Michael Kohner, at 382 Main Street in Hartford. Michael (who was married to Herman's sister Rosa) had worked with Herman for five years at the latter's store at 466 Main Street. See the Hartford Daily Courant, Saturday Morning, April 12, 1862, page 3.
  • As of November 1865, the retirement of Abraham Stern, from "Stern & Mandlebaum," resulted in Adolph Goldschmidt joining the company as a partner. Because Adolph had been associated with Herman Goldschmidt for several year, the re-structured firm would henceforth be called "Goldschmidt & Mandlebaum". See The Daily Courant, Wednesday Morning, November 8, 1865, page 2.
  • As of at least 11 March 1870, Herman placed an announcement in the newspaper that for the past seventeen years he had done business on Main Street in Hartford. But going forward, he had a new store at 43 Asylum Street and still named "H. Goldschmidt & Co". See The Hartford Daily Courant, Friday, March 11, 1870, page 2.
  • From Hartford Jews, 1659-1970 by Rabbi Morris Silverman, page 173:
    • "Goldschmidt, Herman
    • "Wholesale dry good merchant. Born in Neuzetlitsch, Bohemia, Sept. 26 1831, at the age of 18, he emigrated to Hartford, where his sister, Mrs. I. Hartman, had preceded him. He was first employed by the dry goods firms of Arnstein, Loth & Hartman on Center St. Two years later, he entered into partnership with Maurice Loth, and when Maurice Loth retired, continued the business alone, establishing the first wholesale dry goods store in the state. In 1893, his son, Louis S., became his partner, and when Herman Goldschmidt retired after being in business for 50 years, his son continued the business.
    • "For 40 years the Goldschmidts home was at the corner of Pleasant and Winstrop sts., which, in 1902, was purchased by the Hebrew Institute of Hartford.
    • "Herman Goldschmidt was president of Ararat Lodge, B'Nai Brith, 1862, and president of its Widow and Orphan Society in 1869. He served as president of Congregation Beth Israel from 1872 to 1873 and from 1879 to 1880. For 28 years he was a school board member of the Third District (2nd North School) and was among the first Jews to be active in ST. John's Masonic Lodge. He was vice-president of the German Philodramatic Society in 1868. The Courant stated that in business and social life, Herman Goldschmidt was a man greatly esteemed by all with whom he had come in contact and was always known for his integrity and industry.
    • "Died Aug. 25, 1905. Survivors: widow, Sarah Goldschmidt; son, Louis S.; daughters, Mrs. Joseph Krotoshiner, Mrs. Emanuel Stern, Mrs. Simon Atkins, Mrs. Henry Goldstein, Rosa, and Lillie.
    • "His widow, Sarah Goldschmidt, died April 20, 1923."
  • From The Daily Courant, Hartford, Saturday Morning, April 12, 1862: "Messrs. H. Goldschmidt and M. Kohner have formed a co-partnership, and will open, to-night or Monday, at 382 Main street, a general dry and fancy goods store. Both of these gentlemen are worthy of the fullest confidence, and deserve a liberal patronage."
