Arrival Halifax June 18, 1899 - Ship Manifest page 7 - Ship: Brasilia (Hamburg Line) Microfilm C-4519
with Dina (age 26) and Marguarite (2), first name Hirsch - labourer!
apparently an officer in Austrian or Russian Army playing in the French Horn in the military band. Killed someone in a "duel" (apparently insulted by an antisemitic comment), and had to flee. Assumed name of a deceased cousin?, and was settled by Baron de Hirsh using these papers? Subsequently panned for silver or gold in BC, and thence to Winnipeg (perhaps in the other order). Apparently owned first kosher butchery with a brother. When first wife died shortly after their 4th child, a neice came as nanny. Subsequently married her, and had seven more children. (Additional info from Judith Teitelbaum Scholl).
Lived at 607 Jarvis St, Winnipeg under name H. Halpen in 1904 city directory
and 666 Flora Ave, Winnipeg under name H. Halpin in 1905 city directory - butcher.
1910 Ottawa City Directory - H. Halpren - pedlr - 280 Water Street
1911 Ottawa City Directory - H. Halpern - pedlr - 207 York St
1917 Ottawa City Directory - H. Halpern - butchr - 29 McGee
Was not liked by his kids, especially the second set, as he looked after the community much more than his own family.
Butcher shop in Ottawa. Made own hot dogs, and smoked meat. (Was an experienced butcher). Story corroborated by both Deena Teitelbaum and Sandra Weinberg.
Apparently from Koslov, Ukraine, though spent time in Vienna (Jerry Halpern).
1911 Canadian Census - in Ottawa District 105, Subdistrict Byward #2 page 6 & 7 (Reference RB31 - Stats Canada).
There is an Interesting death recorded in the USA, that has many of the features of Herman, but contrasts with the death date shown. I am only making a note of it here just in case the shown date eventually proves to be flawed.
