After his first wife Sarah died, he wanted to put all four kids up for adoption. His wife's sister, Rae, who had married his brother Louie wouldn't let that happen. Rae insisted that they raise them with their family. He was supposed to help support them but apparently did not.
He re-married a gentile woman. When Herman was later buried in Inglewood Cemetery (LA, CA), his sister, Dorothy put a mezuzah in the pocket (she didn't like it was a gentile cemetery).
Because of their big age difference, his children were older than Dorothy.
