About Hermann I von Langen

Hermann I von Langen

  • Son of Rudolf I von Langen and Mechtild Van Goor

Van/von Langen Geneology

Here time. That starts with a regest from 1261, which states:

Knight Herman Van Langen and his son Herman, husband of Jutte van Holte, are endowed by Jutte's father Herman van Holte with the estate in Holte, ie with what is left of the castle in Holte. (area quondam castri in Holthe).

Then an important regest from 1281, which states:
'I, knight Herman van Langen, with permission from Virginia, widow of my son Herman , with their heirs Gerard, Lubbert, Herman, Ludolf and Jutte from Langen...'

Gerard..............Lubbert..............Herman..............Ludolf.. ...................Jute

Then the following regest from 1298:

Here it is said that Lubbert, Gerhard, Herman and Ludolf van Langen, brothers, draw up a division. Gerard is well Langen, the other brothers divide the rest, promising that their uncles Gerard and Ludolf van Munster have the right to dispose of it. Moreover, Lubbert and Ludolf separately promise that if their capital increases, their uncles van Munster may use it to improve the financial position of the other brothers van Langen.

In the last act of 1298 the two uncles Gerard and Ludolf van Munster are explicitly mentioned. These are most likely brothers of their (step)mother, and that means that the children of Virginia van Munster and Herman van Langen are mentioned here, who are also mentioned in 1281 (in slightly different order). In 1281 it reads literally: ... et plena voluntate Virgine nobilis feminine relicte filii mei predicti, Gerhardi, Lutberti, Hermanni, Ludolfi et Jutte heredum eorundum...(and with full approval by Virginia, noble widow of my aforementioned son), after which their heirs are named, and these are not necessarily their joint children, but may also be children from a previous marriage.

Incidentally, it seems to me that in 1261 there is a kind of marriage contract, in which Herman van Holte makes the loan to Herman van Langen senior as a kind of dowry for his daughter Jutte married to Herman junior. He does this with the permission of his son Ludwig van Holte, who has opted for an existence as a clergyman. So probably Herman van Langen and Jutta van Holte got married around 1260.

Because Bernd Josef Jansen mentions on his website that Gerhard van Langen is mentioned as a boy in 1278 in a deed, this means that he must have been born before 1264, because you did not become famulus before the 14th year of life. This means that Gerhard was born from Herman van Langen's marriage to Jutta van Holte, and because he is later called lord of Langen, he was the eldest living son in 1298. According to Bernd Jansen, a son Herman van Langen was also born. from the said marriage, who was presumably older, and who died before 1280:

Hermann III. von Langen, born around 1260, died after 1277, urk.

Herman, Gerhard and Ludolf are therefore mentioned in charters of 1277, 1278 and 1280, which are unfortunately unknown to me.

Finally in 1298 4 brothers make a division:

Lubbert Gerhard Herman Ludolf attended by their uncles Gerhard and Ludolf van Munster.

Jutta van Holte was still alive in 1265, because then she is still officially mentioned, but after that she no longer occurs. It appears that she died shortly afterwards. Virginia van Munster is officially mentioned as the wife of Herman van Langen in 1277. Their marriage will therefore probably have taken place a little earlier. Jutta, Ludwig and Gertrud van Holte were the children of Hermann van Holte and Sophia van Ravensberg. In 1244 Herman and Sophia are mentioned as a couple in a deed. Sophia was probably born about 1220, and was still alive in 1275. Sophia's father Lodewich van Ravensberg died about 1249, so an estimated birth year of Sophia between 1210-1225 can be quite correct, but really not much earlier than that. Jutta van Holte was born between 1230-1245. Her marriage to Herman van Langen will therefore have taken place in 1245-1260, and that is quite in line with the entry from 1261. It therefore seems reasonable to maintain a wedding date of 1255-1260. Her first son Herman was born around 1261, and may have also been the reason for Herman van Holte to involve Herman van Langen, the old one, in the loan with the estate Holte, in the knowledge that his daughter would have legitimate offspring ( and they would not come through his only son Lodewich, who was a clergyman).

As a solcher there is a tritt from 1311 auf. Holthusen (s. 28):
"Mit seiner Zweiten Frau Virginia von Münster war Hermann II. 1277 (Inv. Kr. Warendorf S. 354. Nr. 1.) verheiratet.

Hermann Luste und Ludolf were neither born 1277 nor niece.

It seems likely that Herman van Langen, mentioned in 1261 as son of knight Herman van Langen, was married to 1. Jutta van Holte, and 2. Virginia van Munster.

There is still an undated deed from ca 1285, drawn up after the death of Herman I van Langen (the editors of the Westfällisch Urkundenbuch date this deed to ca. 1267). It is about a marriage promise to Albert Droste, that one of the sons of Herman II van Langen will marry a daughter of Albert Droste, when they have reached the legal age. The agreement also meant that the son, who would marry Albert Droste's daughter, would also own the property in Langen by inheritance. Since we see in 1298 that Gerhard van Langen is endowed with the estate at Langen, he should be the one who married Albert Droste's daughter, but I have no information to see whether that actually happened.

Ludolf I. von Langen, born um 1278 (Religion: rK), died after 1335, urk. 1280-1335, Domherr in Münster 1311, 1315 Inhaber des officiums Darfeld, Sohn von Hermann II. von Langen (see 19599) and Virginia von Münster (see 23899).

From this it can be concluded that Gerhard van Langen is mentioned as a boy in 1278, ie he is already 14 years old, and therefore was born before 1264, and was therefore born as son of Herman van Langen X Jutta van Holte. We do not see the eldest son Herman from this marriage again, so he died before 1280. From the two marriages of Herman II van Langen at least 6 children were born, of which the eldest died. The other 5 children are named as heirs in 1281:

I, knight Herman van Langen, with permission from Virginia, widow of my son Herman, with their heirs Gerard, Lubbert, Herman, Ludolf and Jutte van Langen...'

The order of the children (except for Jutta, because girls were almost always named last) then corresponds exactly to the order in which they were born. Of these 5 children we see 4 more in 1298, and then Lubbert, who was already a clergyman (and therefore highly regarded at that time) is mentioned as the first, although Gerhard was the eldest born.

In 1230 the two brothers Herman and Johan van Langen are mentioned in a deed, without any titles, but it seems beyond any doubt that it concerns lord Herman I van Langen with his brother Johan van Langen. Information from Bernd Jansen shows that they are sons of Rudolf I van Langen: Herman was his eldest son, and Johan the second son. There were also a sister Jutta and a brother Ludolf

Gerhard and Herman Luste had legitimate offspring from these sons. The two brothers Johan and Herman van Langen, who are mentioned in the above deed of 1298, are grandsons of Johan van Langen.

For the sake of completeness, I also present here the deviating interpretation given by the compilers of the Westfällisch Urkundenbuch:

(Rudolf I van Langen) X NN. † Herman I Van Langen (named 1226-1276) X Mechteld (named 1259-1265) Lubbert Johan X NN | † Herman II van Langen (d. 1246-1285) X Jutta van Holte Rudolf (and others)

† X Jutte van Munster

  • ** Children

Ludike.......Herman IV (Luste) .......Jutte........Gerhard .......Ludolf

It is difficult to determine which of the two versions is the correct one. In 1292/1293 there is an act in which Gerhard van Langen is mentioned with matre sua Virginia, and his sister Jutte and brothers Herman and Ludolf, but does matre mean mother or stepmother? Based on the fact that Gerhard was born before 1264 (because he is mentioned as famulus in 1278) it seems more likely that he was a son of Jutta van Holte. Bernd Jansen is based on a work 'Chronik der von Langen' by Prof. Brockhusen believes that the first arrangement given is correct. The crucial question is always: from which couple do Gerhard, Lubbert and Jutte van Langen come:

A quote from said work (p. 31):

seiner Zweiten Frau Virginia auftritt, müssen but die genannten Kinder,
Tatsache, dass Gerhard from the first Ehe Hermanns II. mit Jutta von Holte
Bezeichnenderweise is 1304 Gerhards
Hermann steht nämlich später stets hinter Gerhard, who denn also nicht
Dom dechant."

The last word on this has probably not yet been spoken.
