His Testament Dative and Inventory

The testament dative and inventory of Hew Cathcart of Carleton was given up by his eldest son, John Cathcart of Carleton. The money "adebted & awand" to his deceased father included twelve hundred merks which had been lent to Robert McAlexander of Corsclayes by the now also deceased: "Mr Hew Cathcart father brother to the defunct" who subsequently assigned the money owed to him to his nephew, Hew Cathcart of Carleton. Confirmation was granted to John Cathcart of Carleton on 15 January 1679. 14 April 1673: Discharge by John, Lord Bargany, to John Kennedy of Girvan Maynes of 3175 merks following on the latter's alienation and disposition of the 30s. land of Upper Garnockburne and Greyt Fardine, 20s. land of Nethergarnockburne, 20s. land of Nether Preistcraig, 20s. land of Upper Preistcraig etc., in lieu of repayment of the said principal sum, due by David Kennedy of Knockdaw to Hugh Cathcart, uncle to the laird of Cairltoune, and since assigned by said Hugh to Lord Bargany. 10 December 1674: Bond by Fergus McCubine [McCubbin] of Knokdolliane [Knockdolian], in view of the liberty granted to him at this date by Hew Cathcart of Carltoun [Carleton] to drain the loch of Lochstroyane and "cast ane watergaite (if it be neidfull) through his land of Moake", to accept the arbitration of Sir John Kennedy of Girvanmains [Girvan Mains], Kt., Bt., and Quintin Kennedy of Drumnellane [Drumellan] on the valuation of whatever "skaith" the said Hugh's land may sustain. Descent of the Lands of Carleton and Killochan 1540-1703

Papers of the Cathcart Family of Carleton and Killochan: Carleton and Killochan (from 1540.) Robert Cathcart of Carleton, who married Elizabeth Corrie and died about 1560. John Cathcart of Carleton, his eldest son, who married Helen Wallace, completed the house of Killochan, and died 1612. John Cathcart of Carleton, his eldest son, who married Rebecca Lokhart [Lockhart] and died 1633. Mr. Hew Cathcart, Tutor of Carleton, his second son. Hew Cathcart of Carleton, grandson of the above John, who married Grizel Agnew and died 1677. John Cathcart of Carleton, his eldest son, who married Annabella Maxwell, without issue, and died 1679. Hew Cathcart, second son of the above Hew, who succeeded his brother, was created a baronet 1703, and married Anne Broun [Brown], with issue. He resigned all his lands to the Crown for re-grant, being resolved "to alter and change the holding", and the series of titles concludes with his new charter of 29 March 1703.
