Not a veteran of the War of 1812

On Jan 14th 2018, West Pact attached some War of 1812 records to Hezekiah Cockrum FamilySearch profile L1R1-GZM. The records actually belong to a different Hezekiah Cockrum, the son of Hezekiah's 2nd wife Judith (Cooley) Cockrum/Sparks/Cockrum. Her son, from her 1st husband Daniel Cockrum, Hezekiah FamilySearch profile 2ZWG-LP2, that was married to a Lucy Marshall. Those Cockrums' got married on 19 Dec 1822 and moved to TN, per her pension https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X8CR-5YH - I have removed the records you attached - It did seem odd that my Hezekiah, born about 1766, would have been in the war of 1812.

Cochrane Bible with a death date of 1803 for Hezekiah Cockrum refers to Junior

Researcher Gail Moore (see below) indicates that in the family Bible Hezikiah's surname is spelled "Cockruin". Spellings of this surname vary even within the family Bible which was thought to have been brought over with the first family who immigrated from Scotland. Hezikiah's birth is the first date recorded in this old Bible.

Numerous variations of this surname are noted in records through the years: Cockrum/Cockerham/Cothrum/Cockruin/Cockrun/Cockran,/Cochran/Cochrane/Cothran, Cothrum

Active online researcher and descendant Gail Moore (embrancer@ct.net) is the granddaughter of Ovid Dunlap & Zona (Entriken) Cothran. She states: "Ovid Dunlap Cothran ended up with the original bible. It belonged before that to his father George Washington Lafayette Cothran. I believe it belonged to George to start with. It is evident that three different folks wrote in this bible. Perhaps wives. I have traced the Cothran line all the way back now to early 1700's to Caroline Co. VA. William the Father of both Hezikiah Allen and George W. L. was the son of an older Hezikiah b. 1762 who is in fact listed in this bible.

The given name is sometimes seen as "Hezekiah", and the spelling of this surname is seen as "Cockerham" - Gail Moore (embracer@ct.net or embracer@strato.net) has shared many years of her family research and it is her data I am posting. I have references to Hezikiah by surname Cothran and Cockerham. I have a printout of a transcription of a Cochrane family Bible, submitted to http://www.biblerecords.com/cochrane.html by Gail. She stated: "I have copies only from an old family Bible now sealed and held by a cousin. Name Cothran is an old spelling from Scotland. Seen as Cochrane sometimes, without the e. We think this Bible came over with family from Scotland around 1762 as this is the birthdate of our first known ancestor." That ancestor is Hezikiah Cockrum(1762 - 1846?). Within this Bible transcription, the surname is spelled various: Cockruin (Hezikiah in birth record entry in the Bible), Cockrane, Cockrum, Cothran, & Cothrum. Gail summed up the Bible transcription with the following: "We were black Irish rebels run out of Ireland, but family came from Scotland. During the Civil War (? European) 2 brothers went to war, one was married, one was single. The single man came home while the married man died. The single man married his brother's widow and changed the spelling of the name at his wife's request for a new name"

Hezikiah Cockerham appeared with his family in Greenville District, SC in 1790. At that time he was married to his first wife Elizabeth, mother of all his children. The family lived on the Reedy Fork of the Reedy River in Greenville District.. Living nearby were Cockran/Cochran families/family from Henry Co., VA. http://newsfeed.rootsweb.com/th/read/COCHRAN/1998-02/0886986565.

Hezikiah was married x 3.:

  • Elizabeth (LNU) (notation in the family Bible smeared from water stains and unreadable, per Gail Moore.) Hezikiah & Elizabeth had the following children: William (1/24/1786 - 2/27/1840) who married Mary Spillers (daughter of George Spillers) in May, 1812; John (b. 8/20/1789) who married Sarah (LNU) and they had at least 1 child: George Seaborn Cockrun/m; Martha (b. 3/11/1792) who married Miles Jennings and moved to AL; Daniel (6/4/1794 - 3/28/1811); Elizabeth (2/28/1796 - 8/11/1803); Nancy (10/15/1800) who married Daniel Cockrum and they moved to Cherokee Co., AL.
  • Judith (Cooley) Sparks, she married her 1st husband Daniel Cockrum about 1791, her 2nd husband Jessie Sparks about 1809 before marrying Hezikiah, she died prior to 28 March 1838
  • Sarah LNU - mentioned in Hezikiah's will of 1843 in Greenville District, SC.

We now at long last know who the parents of Hezikiah Cockrum/Cockerham b. 2/19/1762 Halifax Co. VA were - they were Daniel Cockrum of Halifax and Martha his wife. After his untimely death, Martha was found in the court order books as having married again to Samuel Pegg/Pigg and this is why Hezikiah Cockrum witenssed a deed for them later on in SC- this is also why Hezikiah named a daughter Martha and a son Daniel." - Gail Moore (embracer@strato.net).
