About Holland "Holton" Gary

Note BIRTH:1. Vermont vital Records, 1760-1954: HOLTON GARY, birth-male, birth July 3 - 1805, father GARY JOHN, town of Westminster. (Charles Wright , pontegwatrail@netzero.net, says this card is actually a transcription from the old books. They went through and put them all on index cards for easy lookups and to stop using the old books (falling apart) to save them; note on the card at the bottom right, after "Town Clerk" it says "no name", that's because it's a transcription, and the transcriber is letting us know that the town clerk didn't add his name on the original. So I believe "Holton" is a misspelling (handwriting interpretation) or a misunderstanding as there were MANY "Holtons" in Westminster (I descend from them) and since Holland is uncommon, they thought it was Holton instead.)

CHURCH: 1. "HOLLAND GARY joined the Congregational Church in Westminster, [Windham, Vermont], May 6, 1823, and was dismissed, April 11, 1836, as it says he moved to "Western, NY." [source: Charles B. Wright, P.O. Box 519, Walpole, NH 03608].

MARRIAGE: 1. Vermont, Vital Records, 1760-1954: groom HOLLAND GARY, male, residence of groom Westminster, bride MARY E. WRIGHT, date of marriage 15 Dec 1833 at Westminster, Vermont, film #00527556, digital folder #004661689, image #01618. DEATH and BURIAL: 1. "The Wells Elmer Cemetery 20.2 is located on Lot 110 as shown on the 1869 Map of Hume. It is very accessible as it is mowed and located immediately next to Route 19 A, just north of Rossburg. In an attempt to compile a more complete list, the following was assembled from several recordings done over the last 70 years: Gertrude Barber's 1933 reading, Archie Eldridge's c.1968 reading and an inventory in 2003 by Town Historian Rondus Miller. Assembled by Mary Rhodes, 2005." Wells Elmer Cemetery, Town of Hume, Allegany, New York: ELNORA EVELINA GARY, daughter of Holland and Mary E. Note Holden is the Maiden name of his Grand Mother. This family has it's names spelled in at least 3 variations, Gary, Geary, Garey, I think that has to do with lack of education. I go by Thomas Garey. I think the original transcription should have been Holden vs. Holten. As the name Holten appears nowhere in our family record. Also, on that 1850 Census the Mother is Ruth Hatch who Married John Garey, Sr., in Walpole, Cheshire, New Hampshire, USA on 25 Nov 1785. Both Parents are Buried in Westminster, Windham, Vermont, USA at Old Westminster Cemetery, Westminster, Windham County, Vermont, USA. That Being Edward Garey and Phebe Holden, along with Isaiah Hatch and Joanna Whitcomb.

Below Isaiah Hatch, all of the children are his decendants and of the Mayflower via; Edward Doty, Sr. and Richard Warren. Through Isaiah Hatch.

I always knew him as Holten from the Transcription, and thought he was dead without issue. But from Holten to Holland to what I think is Holden Garey, again after his Grandmother. His Nephew Ephriam Garey the Son of John, Jr., was also living in Granger, New York during that same time when he Married Betsey Townsend, in Granger, New York on 17 Apr 1851. He joined his Father John, Jr. in Michigan soon after the death of Betsey Townsend's Mother Julia A. Jones, and probably Ruth Garey(Hatch). Because by 1870 our entire branch moved to Michigan. And set up near Jackson, Michigan.

I can Verify from family Journals that our Family was in Granger, Allegany, New York, USA during this time.

Now the big question; Does anybody know what happened to Providence Garey/ Gary their Sister so I can update the Family Records.....Thanks to much. Thomas Garey
