(3) 1631 Elizabeth Thomson (d. c.Jun 1637), dau. of Robert Thomson, of Greenwich, co. Surrey, Keeper of the Queen's Wardrobe. only child by third marriage:

3. Hon Ann Mackay, mar. Alexander Macdonald, brother of Sir James Macdonald of Sleat. He died c 1657.

Family

5. Alexander [MacDonald] of Paiblisgearry, in North Uist. In 1653 he married Anne Mackay, sister of John, Lord Reay, and by her had issue -

(a) Captain Hugh Macdonald, who succeeded.

(b) Barbara, who married Lachlau Maclean of Torloisk.

Alexander died in or before 1657, as his wife appears on record as a widow in the course of that year. Hence in Sir James Macdonald's Deed of Entail, in 1658, his name dues not appear along with the Baronet's other brothers.

Captain Hugh Macdonald of Paiblisgearry succeeded his father.

The 2003 edition of BP does not give the 1st Lord Reay a daughter Anna, whether married to Hugh Munro, minister of Durness, or anyone else. The same is true for the account of Reay in SP.

... this 30 Mar 1686 document indicates that the late Lord [John] Reay was Capt Hugh's mother's [half] brother, i.e., his own uncle. Captain Hugh Macdonald tells us his father was Alexander Macdonald, so that fits too. He appears to have been the first husband of Anna Mackay and The Reverend Hugh Munro was the second. Therefore, an Anna Mackay, with descent from Edward III [8th great-granddaughter] and James IV, King of Scots [4th great-granddaughter] is possible.
