About Hon John Ingram
John Ingram, sixth son of Arthur Ingram, 3rd Viscount Irvine, of Temple Newsam, near Leeds, England, baptized, April 6, 1693, emigrated to America 1714, assessed at Concord Twp. now (Del. Co., Pa) 1715, Goshen Township, Chester County, Pa., 1717 to 1725. Occupation, “Blacksmith”. Married Susanna Leatham about 1728. Settled at “Ingram’s Hill”, in Whiteland Township, Chester County, Pa., 1730. He secured a patent to 206 Acres, 6 Perches of land, on April 23, 1734.
Dec. 14, 1751 he disposed of 68 Acres to William Beale, and the remainder of 138 Acres of the tract to George Ashbridge, in 1754. He resided in Whiteland Township until his death, which occurred about 1788.
Tradition says: That after the Battle of Brandywine, a detachment of British soldiers destroyed his family records and other personal effects, to prevent his identification as an heir to his father’s estate.
