(IV) Thomas Saunders, son of Captain Thomas Saunders, was born at Gloucester. August 14. 1729, married, 1752. Lucy Smith. daughter of Rev. Thomas Smith. of Falmouth. Maine. Mr. Saunders died in 1774. She married second, Rev. Eli Forbes and died June 5. 1780. aged forty-eight years. She is buried at the side of her first husband and the name of her second husband does not appear on the stone.
Thomas Saunders fitted for college under Rev. Moses Parsons, of Byfield, and was graduated from Harvard College in 1748. Though most graduates at that time became ministers and teachers, he chose a commercial life and became a prosperous merchant. He represented Gloucester in the general court from 1761 to 1770 inclusive. Afterward he was a councilor until June, 1773, when he resigned. He built the large mansion house near the Unitarian meeting house and lived there a number of years.
At the time of his death Rev. S. Chandler said “... In the uneven traces of life, he exemplified the grace of patience and preserved a calm and harmony within himself. ....”
