At age 30, Thomas was appointed one of the Associate Justices of the Supreme Judical Court of the State which he filled until 1803. He was appointed Judge of Probate for Suffolk Co until his death.

He was a small man, under 5 ft, had long gray hair and spoke with a striking lisp. He wore small clothes and buckled shoes.
