About Horace Datus Ensign
HORACE DATUS ENSIGN, EARLY L.D.S. SAINT
Horace Datus Ensign, wife Mary Bronson - Ensign, and their seven children joined the L.D.S. church in the early 1840's. Per one account -- "Horace Datus was a very religious man and embraced the Mormon faith in 1842 and at once began preparations to join the body of the Saints in Nauvoo, Illinois. They arrived soon after the martyrdom of Joseph Smith and left that city with the exodus. He succumbed to black canker at Winter Quarter, Iowa, dying on his 48th birthday. His wife and family continued on to Utah, arriving in Sept. 1847. It may be that Brigham Young named Ensign's Peak, at the site of Salt Lake City, after this man".
