Horace was born in Middletown, Rutland Co, Vermont to John Sunderlin Jr. and Esther Clark. In 1817 he came to the Sennett area and worked by the month for local farmers. He returned to Vermont for a visit, returning shortly thereafter. He is reported to have made these trips on foot. In 1821 he married Ruth Bennett, the daughter of Amos Bennett and Susannah. In 1822, they moved to Clay, Onondaga Co where they lived for four years employed in clearing land and farming, but he returned to Sennett and settled on the farm of his wife's parents. This farm passed to him upon their death.

After the death of Ruth, Horace married Margaret Glass on 16 May 1835. She was the daughter of James Glass and Christina Jenkenson.

Horace served in several posts of responsibility in the Town of Sennett, including Assessor of the town. He was a Baptist and belonged to the Baptist church in Elbridge.

Towards the end of his life he suffered from cataracts and underwent an operation that left him blind. He died from typhoid pneumonia.

Two of Horace's sisters, Laura and Belinda, also came to the Sennett area. Laura remained unmarried, but Belinda married Almeron Phelps.
