Dropsy was the cause of death of Horatio Nelson Cook. The death of Horatio N. Cook occurred suddenly at his home in Belvedere yesterday morning. He was well and very favorably known in commercial circles In San F'raucisco. A widow and several children survive him. He was married twenty-one years ago to Miss Scoofy. Hiram B. Cook, for many years chief expert in the Auditors office, was his brother.

The death of Horatio Nelson Cook, Consul for Greece, and long and respected merchant of this city, deserves more than ordinary uotice. He was born in Bath, in the state of Maine, July 3, 1843, but came to California in his early youth, and resided in San Francisco until within short time of his decease, when he removed, with his family, to Belvedere. He reeeived a classical education at tlhe old Chittenden College on Bush street, and was noted throughout his life for his familiarity with standard literature. He came from a stalwart race. his father. Captain Matthew M. Look, was long a well known figure on our streets. He had been an owner and master of vessels engaged for many years lv the China trade, but toward the close of his life became associated in business with his so H.. N. Cook. who, about 1860, when a very young man, established a house for the manufacture of Ieather-belting and other articles of that description, which, with a tannery In connection with It, has had a solid position In the commercial world down to the present time. For many years alter his futher's death, prior to which the house was known as M. M. Cook & Sons, Mr. Cook conducted this business ln his own name, and he acquired a high reputation and standing among merchants and In the community at large. As an Illustration of the great appreciation of his character among ail who Knew him, It may be mentioned that several of his employes have remained him since 1863. April 27. 1871, Mr. Cook married the oldest daughter of the late P. M. Scooffy a representative of an historical Greek family, who was successively a merchant in New Orleans and San Francisco, and who was one of the California pioneers. He leaves a widow and three children, together with several brothers and other relatives, who have been long Identified with our local interests and society. For many years Mr. Cook was a great sufferer through an Injury which resulted In the amputation of one of his legs, but, notwithstanding this disadvantage, he persevered In the occupation he had selected and accumulated a moderate fortune. About two years ago he had an apoplectic stroke, from which he never completely rallied. The patience, cheerfulness and Christian resignation which he manifested throughout his long Illness and retained to the last were extraordinary and greatly endeared him tv his friends. He was a loving husband and father and possessed of unusual amiability, urbanity and intelligence. He was quick in his sympathy and generous in his impulses and in his conduct. His social relations and connections were extended and diversified. He was a man of sound and fine thought, pure and wholesome, feelings, high and noble aims. clear perceptions, diversified knowledge, remarkable conversational gifts, and full of stingless wit and humor. His loss will be genuinely and deeply felt. His death, though anticipated, was sudden when It came. He retained his faculties to the end and died as he had lived, without fear and without reproach. His funeral takes place at 11 o'clock from St. Mary's Cathedral, corner of Van Ness avenue and O'Farrell street, where a solemn requiem mass will be celebrated. COOK— At his residence. Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral THIS day (Thursday), at II o'clock a. v., from St. Mary's Cathedral, corner Van Ness avenue and O'Farrell street, where a solemn requiem mass will be celebrated ror the repose of his soul, commencing at the above hour.
