About Hubartus Mattoon
Hujbrecht (Hutbrecht, Hubartus, Hubert) Matton(e)
Hujbrecht? Rupert?
Reputed to be of French Huguenot origin, the MATTOONS probably bore the continental name of MATON. Thousands of French Huguenots took refuge in Holland and England in the wake of religious persecutions in France during the 15th century. Among the names found in early English sailing lists are a few Matons, but no Mattoons. The first colonial ancestor for whom our authentic records have been found was Hujbrecht (Hutbrecht, Hubartus, Hubert) Matton(e), whose name appears originally as a witness to Thomas Walford's deed in 1648/49, at Strawberry Banke, (Portsmouth), N.H. The Dutch spelling of his first name (by his own hand) indicates the strong likelihood of family residence in Holland in his formative years, at least. [In the book 'Mattoon Family Genealogy'] will be found a copy of Hujbrecht's signature as it appears when, with others from Kittery, Maine, he signed an Oath of Allegiance to the government of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Nov. 16, 1652. It is this Hujbrecht Matton(e) who is attributed by reputable genealogists to be the father of Philip Mattoon of Deerfield, Mass.

Donald P. Mattoon, and wife Lillian, prepared a manuscript, "Mattoon Family in Europe and Early America." This document attempts to prove that Hujbrecht (or Rupert) Mattoon was the father of Philip (in addition to John (an older brother), Richard (a younger), and Grace (a sister). Hujbrecht bought property in Saco, MA in 1683 and shows him "a Portsmith tailor and fine gentleman of unknown antecedents, frist seen as witness to Thos. Walford's deed, 1 January 1648/9." "His continental origin, possibly from a Walloon family in Canterbury or London, probably assumed largely because of the spelling of his name, which combined a Dutch and French connotation."
