Emigrated to the US (Grant County, Wisconsin) in 1848. Went overland to California with his cousin Sam Livingston in 1850. See diary of James Cochrane Kirkpatrick in the Minnesota and Wisconsin Historical Archives. See The Ring by Lynn Hancock. Reportedly found gold in the Crow Branch mines and made a fortune, allowing him to purchase 1000 acres of land. He donated land and had the town of Livingston, Wisconsin named after him.
"He was a man of great endurance, very energetic and had an indomitable will, which he always used in the right direction. Whenever he sustained losses or had reverses it never troubled him, but seemed to give him greater energy. In all his transactions with his fellow men, it is impossible to find one of them to say truly that every dollar of his wealth was not his. He was a descendant of a long line of honest yeomen; and he would scorn a dishonest act. He did not accumulate wealth merely for the love of it. He was public spirited; he made large donations for public improvements, always encouraging churches, schools and railroads or anything that was a benefit to the community. The poor or distressed never appealed to him in vain, but he was always ready to relieve the afflicted or distressed. He could injure no person either by word or deed. He was true and just in all his dealings. In his heart there was no place for hatred or malice. He spoke no evil of any person. He was temperate and sober and always on the right side of every moral and religious question." obituary
