About Hugh Earley
Arrived in NZ in August 1855 from Ireland. He was a sergeant in the 65th regiment and he arrived on the "Duke of Portland". He saw service around Taranaki during the maori wars and saw service in the Waireka battle near Waitara. he was awarded the NZ star medal for his service in February 1873. He left the regiment late in 1860, following his battle and as a military settler was alloted land. he was granted a section in New plymouth on the North West corner of Courtney and Elliot street and presumably built a house and liverd there with his family for he appears in electoral rolls at that address for almost 20 years
