About Hugh Grimes

Hugh Grimes (abt. 1700 – bef. April 1781) was an Americana wheelwright living in Goshen Swamp, Duplin County, North Carolina.

Hugh was born sometime around 1700 in Virginia, possibly in Lower Norfolk County. Hugh and his wife and children relocated from Bertie County in 1752. In November 1761, Grimes received a land grant #281 for 250. acres in the area..The grave sites were re-discovered approximately 15 years ago when C.C. Ivey lead Hugh Grimes of Louisiana to the old Grimes cemetery. Their children were James, Sampson and Joseph Grimes. Elizabeth is on the payroll voucher list in 1783/1784 for supplying provisions for the army. She died after 1784.

Will of Hugh Grimes
In the name of God amen the second of April ano Domini one thousand seven hundred and eighty. I HUGH GRIMES being sick in body but of good and perfect memory thanks be to Almighty God and calling to remembrance the uncertain state of this transitory life and that all flesh must yield unto death when it shall please God to call do make constitute ordain and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following and annulling by these presents all and every testament and testaments will and wills heretofore by me made and declared either by word or writing and this is to be taken only for my last will and testament and none other and first being penitent and sorry from the bottomness of my heart for my sins past most humbly desiring forgiveness for the same, I give and commit my soul unto almight God my savior and redeemer in whom and by the merits of Jesus Christ I trust and believe already to be saved and to have full remission and forgiveness of all my sins and that my soul with my body at the general day of Resurrection shall rise again with Joy and through the merits of Christ death and passion possess and inherit the Kingdom of heaven prepared for his Elect and chosen, and my body to be buried in such a place as shall please my Executors hereafter named to appoint and now for the settling of my temporal estate and such goods chattels and debts as it hath pleased God for above my deserts to bestow upon me I desire to give and dispose of the same manner and from following that is to say. First of all, I will that all those debts and dues as I owe in Right or conscience to my manner of person or persons whatsoever shall be will and truly counted & paid or ordered to be pain within convenient time after my desires by my Executors hereafter named.</br>
I give to my grandson JESSE GRIMES one feather bed and furniture, and the rest of my estate which I now possess I do bind to my beloved wife her lifetime and at her decease to be equally divided amongst my children and I leave my son JOSEPH GRIMES and son J__ GRIMES, executors to this my last will and testament given under my hand and seal this day and date above mentioned.

Book 5, page 399. Hugh Grimes to James Grimes. (his son).
Dated: 15 October 1777, and in the Second year of the Independence of the United States of America. Trans: 100 pounds for 620 acres of land in four tracts. First tract consisted of 180 acres. On the North side of Goshen Swamp and on the East side of a branch thereof, known by the name of Hall's Marsh. Land was part of 550 acres granted to Richard Malpos by patent in 1747.
Second tract consisted of 100 acres, on the West side of Halls Marsh, Hooker's Marsh and Malures line. Land was part of 550 acres granted to John Sullivan by patent dated 29 April 1767.
Third tract consisted of 190 acres on the North side of Goshen Swamp and on the West side of Halls Marsh, joining lines of Joseph Grimes and John Winders. Land was granted to William Pierce by patent, dated 4 May 1769 and conveyed by him to Hugh Grimes.
Fourth tract consisted of 150 acres, on the North side of Goshen Swamp and on the West side of Halls Marsh, opposite to his plantation.
Deed mentions Richard Malpos, "a meadow", and a small branch. Land was the upper part of 250 acres granted to the said Hugh Grimes by patent dated, 19 April 1763.

Dated: 10 April 1752, and in the Twenty Sixth year of the Reign of Our Lord Sovereign Lord George the Second by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and England, King Defender of the Faith. Trans: 20 pounds "Current money of Virginia" for 100 acres. On the North side of Goshen Swamp and on the East side of a Branch thereof known by the name of Hall's Marsh. Land was part of a tract of 550 acres granted to Richard Malpos bearing date, 4 February 1747.
Witness: John Dickson
(Deed begins on page 172 and is concluded on page 178). Deed was proven 10 April 1753.
