About Hugh McCabe
This is from Hugh's obituary, on the front page of The Chelsea (Michigan) Standard, December 2, 1909:
Hugh McCabe, a resident of this place (Chelsea, Michigan) for over thirty years passed away Wednesday, November 24th, at the age of 94 years, 6 months, and 14 days.
He was born in County Louth, Ireland, May 10, 1815. He came to America on June 24, 1830; in 1936 he was united in marriage to Miss Bridget Monahan, of Seneca Falls, New York.
In the fall of 1844 he moved with his wife and three sons to Michigan and settled in the township of Green Oaks, Livingston County, which was at that time a wilderness. Six more children were born to them. Two sons, Michael and Owen, died in infancy. In 1861 his wife died at the age of 40 years.
His three oldest sons, Felix, James, and Patrick, served in the Civil War, and two, Felix and Patrick, died while in service. James died at Carpentersville, Illinois, in 1873. In 1903 his son Henry died at Howell and in 1908 his son Hugh died at Brighton, leaving to mourn hisi death two daughters. Mrs. Mary Colon of Pinckney and Mrs. Rose Lyons, of this place, one sister, Mrs. Alice Roane, of Auburn, New York, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Note: Felix died in te infamous Confederate prison at Andersonville, Georgia; Patrick died of rubeola at Alexandria, Virginia. James was also in Andersonville.
