About Hugues de la Tour du Pin, Bishop of Clermont

Curator's Note: Various historians place a Hugues de La Tour du Pin in three separate generations--two as the Bishop of Clermont who died in 1249 (Wikipedia positions him as the son of Albert I, Cawley of Medlands as the son of Albert II, both dying the same year, which makes me suspicious that there was only one who served 1227-1249). And then the third generation was Hugues, a son of Albert III, an Abbot of Clermont who died 1289.

Further research adds more to the placement of Bishop Hugh (who died 1249) as the son of Albert II and his wife Marie d'Auverne rather than as Albert's brother. Hugh succeeded his uncle Robert d'Auvergne as Bishop of Clermont. The biographical sketch (attached under Media Tab) from p. 36 of the Chronologie des évêques de Clermont adds weight to this. He was succeeded by his nephew Gui de La Tour, named by Benoît Gonod as the son of Gui de la Tour who donated an old chateau in Clermont to the church in 1273 which was made into a church and consecrated in 1284 (the building later served as the Departmente Archives).

Cawley places him as son of Albert II, although he only has one source and it has two Hugues (Hugos).

5. HUGUES de la Tour (-Palestine 28 Dec 1249). Bishop of Clermont 1227. “Hugo...Claromontanus episcopus et Humbertus dominus Bellijoci, et Arbertus dominus de Turre, et Guido archidiaconus Lugdunensis, et Arbertus de Turre, et Hugo senescalcus Lugdunensis fratres” agreed an alliance under a charter dated Sep 1246[2160].

Curator: This quote is difficult to interpret. It refers to Hugh, the Bishop of Clermont, and Albert Lord of La Tour and Guy, Archdeacon of Lyon and Albert of La Tour and Hugh, Seneschal of Lyon, brothers. This is two Hughs and two Alberts. I believe something is missing, but one would need to see the original text and context to try to find more clarity.

Wikipedia places him as son of Albert I and brother of Albert II:
