About Humphrey Sturt, 2nd Baron Alington
A rainy day in 1890 as an aristocrat from Alington family and his friend out of the window and decided to bet on which raindrop on glass window that would hit the bottom of the window first.
The two men bet five pounds, a sizable sum in 1890, on each drop. Aristocrats lost friend, and went to the bank to withdraw money. If he was bitter for having lost, or just a great jester is not known, but the man asked for money in the smallest coin denomination that existed - farthing.
The property was Alington-family ownership for 300 years, until Mary Marten, goddaughter of the late Queen Mother and childhood friend of Princess Margaret, who died at age 80 in 2010.
The mansion went on to Mary Martens six children and was eventually sold to an unknown buyer in 2013.
