DIED SUDDENLY

WAS DOING CHORES AROUND THE PLACE A FEW MINUTES BEFORE DEATH

This community was shocked last Wednesday when it was learned that Hyrum S. Rich had died suddenly between 11 and 12 o'clock a.m. Hyrum was apparently well when he arose Wednesday morning, altho he did say to his wife at breakfast that he was not feeling so well as usual. He had been out doing chores etc.and his son Marvin was drilling grain, Hyrum went to the granary to get some grain and did not return, after about an hour, Marvin thinking he was gone longer than he should be, went to see what the trouble was and found his father in the granary. He had only been dead a few minutes. The doctor was summoned and pronounced death due to apoplexy. Hyrum S. Rich was born at Paris Idaho September 26, 1870. The family lived there a few years and moved to Fish Haven and from there they moved to St. Charles where they lived for a number of years. He was married to Angelina Allred in 1890, and four years later in 1894 they came to Star Valley, where they bought the present home ranch were the family have lived since. Hyrum and Mrs rich are the parents of ten children, 7 girls and 3 boys. Two of the girls and one boy have passed away. It was just 9 years to the day since one daughter and her husband died form ptomaine poisoning from eating beets. The oldest daughter Leone, died several years ago with the flu and Lavell, the oldest son died about two years ago. seven children still survive him they are Elmo Marvin, Duane, Jean, Ethel, Evelyn and Maurine. There are 23 grandchildren. Hyrum was a grandson of apostle Charles C. Rich and is the second member of a family of 12 to die so that in his family he leaves four brothers and six sisters still living. He would have been 57 years of age had he lived until next September. He has always taken an active part in church affairs and has always been on hand to do his part of any work in that line that he was called upon to do. He has labored as a ward teacher both in Bear Lake and most of the time since he came to Afton. He held the priesthood of a seventy at the time of his death. Hyrum has always been a great lover of the manly sports, such as baseball, track events etc. and he and his sons have made excellent records in these events, being among the best. He has always b een one of the fairest and most conscientious of men in all these events and would rather take a defeat at any time then to win if it could not be an honest win. He never practiced any deceit and would leave a game if he thought it was unfair. His honest and integrity have never been questioned. The one thing that we could desire, is more citizens like H.S. Rich has been. Funeral services will be held in the South Ward Chapel at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday)
